Shale gas currently supplies about 30% of America’s gas needs. A shale gas drilling boom, combined with a sharp economic recession, led to low gas prices in North America, compared to European and Asian gas prices.

As the EU starts a debate on its 2030 climate and energy targets, many EU Member States are keen to emulate North America’s supposed success story with the development of its unconventional resources.

Before Europe starts enabling shale gas, regardless of the major climate, environmental, social and health risks involved, a reality check is needed about the economic potential of shale gas.Can shale gas continue to increase its share in America’s energy mix? And how sustainable are current low gas prices? Is shale gas drilling profitable at such low prices in the US? What can we expect from shale gas in Europe in terms of reduced imports and lower gas prices? Can shale gas compensate the EU’s declining conventional gas production?

Experts David Hughes – author of the Drill, Baby, Drill report – and Werner Zittel – co-author of the latest Energy Watch Group report– will present their findings about the shale gas boom in the US and the limited potential of shale gas for Europe.
