• Road4FAME in a nutshell

The Road4FAME project develops a strategic research and innovation roadmap for IT architectures and services in manufacturing – focusing on architectures and services, which facilitate agile and flexible manufacturing processes, ease interoperability in distributed manufacturing environments, support effective collaboration in context-aware enterprises, and provide the foundations for sustainable manufacturing.

The roadmap serves to align future ICT research with the defined needs of European manufacturing businesses and offers European manufacturing businesses with a useful reference to derive innovation strategies and identify novel business opportunities. That being said Road4FAME provides a foundation for unlocking the innovation potential of IT architectures and services for the manufacturing domain.

  • Factories of the Future Public-Private Partnership

In early 2009 the European Commission launched three public-private partnerships (PPPs) as part of its European Economic Recovery Plan (adopted in November 2008) to tackle the economic downturn that badly affected industry in Europe. These PPPs are designed to fund research and innovation in the manufacturing, construction and automotive sectors to boost competitiveness and increase employment. Progress over the past four years has shown that the scheme is having a positive effect in manufacturing, in the automotive industry and is starting to boost energy efficiency in construction.

Manufacturing plays a vital role in Europe. Some 230,000 enterprises, mostly SMEs, directly provided more than 30 million jobs – some 20 % of EU employment and with twice that number in related services. Therefore the Factories of the Future PPP aims to support the development of enabling technologies to foster greater innovation in Europe’s manufacturing industry while securing its competitiveness and sustainability.

  • European Factories of the Future Research Association

Road4FAME is supported by the European Factories of the Future Research Association (EFFRA), established to represent the private side in the ‘Factories of the Future’ public-private partnership (PPP).

EFFRA works closely with the European Commission to shape the partnership’s research agenda (the ‘Factories of the Future’ multi-annual roadmap) and to ensure that research priorities are relevant to the needs of European industry. EFFRA promotes the ‘Factories of the Future’ PPP, its projects and undertakes activities to encourage the clustering and exploitation of project results. Building on the EFFRA framework, Road4FAME will elaborate on its implications for IT architectures and services.
